New YAM Festival 2017 At Transcorp Hilton Hotel

Transcorp Hilton Abuja cordially invites you to an opening ceremony of the New Yam Festival featuring Nigerian cultural dances and traditional blessing of the new yam. Come and experience a three day celebration of authentic Nigerian yam dishes.

The New Yam Festival is an annual festival observed mostly by the people of the Middle belt ,South and East of Nigeria. It is celebrated at the end of the rainy season between  August and October. The festival also known as Iwa Ji ,Iri Ji or Ike ji (meaning “eating yam”), is observed throughout West Africa, especially in Nigeria. It symbolises the conclusion of a harvest and the beginning of the next work cycle.

The New Yam Festival is culturally rooted in ancient agrarian Igbo society, where wealth is measured by yam. Yam was the king crop,  the first crop to be harvested and it’s the most important crop. It’s shade of importance spread to ownership, a large barn or barns was definitely an indication of wealth, commerce; likewise a big yam trader and in lifestyle. In Igbo land, it ties the Igbo communities together.
